NIMS Certified CNC Programmer Program

Program

This program prepares students to run manufacturing machines with the help of the versatile CNC (computer numerical control) system. CNC programmers are responsible for creating part programs based on part designs that are then run on CNC lathes and mills. This position demands a solid understanding of G-code programming, part dimensioning, workpiece materials, speeds and feeds, cutting tool theory, and work holding setups. CNC programmers may also be involved in various quality efforts to reduce setup times or improve process control.

The National Institute for Metalworking Skills (NIMS) Program prepares students for NIMS certification. NIMS is a leading manufacturing organization that sets skills standards designed to develop maintain a globally competitive American workforce.

Program Competencies

This program requires a number of competencies involving mathematical processes, machine maintenance, and safety standards.

  1. Applied mathematics, measurements
  2. Geometrical dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T)
  3. Cutting tool assembly
  4. Machining applications and operations
  5. Machine inspection and maintenance
  6. Print reading
  7. Machine and shop safety
